Baptism and christening invitation wording: 8 examples

Updated on 5 October 2026

A baptism (or christening) invitation is usually more playful than a wedding one: often it’s the little one who “speaks”, inviting guests to their very first party. Still, the wording has to say clearly where the service is, when the party starts and by when guests should reply.

Below you’ll find what a baptism invitation should include, examples for a girl and for a boy, and a few ideas for a day that combines a wedding and a baptism. You can try any of them on an invitation from the baptism invitations page.

What a baptism invitation should include

  1. The child’s name, as it will be given at the baptism.
  2. The parents and, if you like, older siblings.
  3. The godparents (nașii). At an Orthodox baptism they hold the child during the service and stay close to them for life, so they have a place of honour on the invitation.
  4. The church and the time of the service. A baptism usually lasts under an hour, and many guests come only to the party. Write both times.
  5. The reception venue and time, with the full address.
  6. The RSVP, with a deadline. Baptisms often have many children among the guests, and the venue needs to know numbers early.

Playful

I’ve decided it’s time to officially join the family. See you at my baptism, as long as nobody laughs if I cry in the font.

A wedding and a baptism on the same day

In Romania, many parents hold their wedding and their child’s baptism on the same day. The invitation then mentions both, and usually two pairs of godparents: the wedding godparents and the baptism godparents.

We’re getting married and christening our daughter, Sofia, on the same day. Together with our wedding godparents, Elena and Mihai, and Sofia’s godparents, Ioana and Andrei, we’d love to celebrate with you.

There are templates made for this kind of day, with room for both pairs of godparents, on the wedding and baptism invitations page.

Tips for baptism invitation wording

  • Pick a voice and stick to it. If the invitation speaks as the child, keep the whole text in the first person, the RSVP included (“Let me know by 1 May if you’re coming”).
  • Write the child’s name exactly as it will be given. It’s the name the family will see on the invitation and in the photos.
  • Say whether children are invited. If they are, ask how many are coming: venues usually have separate menus for them.
  • Give both the service and the party times. Many guests go straight to the reception.

On a Lovelle invitation, the RSVP form can also ask how many children are coming and which menu guests prefer, and the replies add up into a list with totals.

How the wording looks on a digital invitation

On a digital invitation, the opening lines sit above the child’s name, and the parents, godparents, schedule and RSVP each have their own section. The baptism templates also have opening effects: Norișor is all peach and blush, on Micul prinț a crib mobile with a moon and stars comes down, and on Baloane a bunch of balloons lifts the curtain.

The opening text can be rewritten in the editor, so any of the examples above will fit, in your own voice.

Frequently asked questions

Who sends baptism invitations, the parents or the godparents?

Usually the parents, but the wording can mention both. Some families have the godparents invite their own friends.

When should baptism invitations go out?

About 4–6 weeks before, and earlier for guests from other cities or abroad. Set the RSVP deadline at least two weeks before the baptism.

Can the invitation speak as the child, even if they’re a baby?

Yes, it’s the most popular choice. The playful tone works at any age, from newborns to children christened later.

You have the words. Let’s put them on an invitation.

Pick a template, fill it in at your own pace and send it when it’s ready.
